Authorities in Florence have provided new insights into a tragic shooting incident that occurred in March, resulting in the death of 13-year-old Ryland Calvert. During a press conference held on Tuesday, law enforcement officials announced that 17-year-old Cameron Phinizee has been apprehended in connection with this case. Although Phinizee did not fire the weapon that led to Calvert’s death, he faces serious charges including felony murder and robbery.
The investigation revealed that both Phinizee and Calvert were involved in an attempted robbery at the Southern Oaks Apartments, which culminated in the fatal shooting. Lauderdale County District Attorney Chris Connolly shared that a grand jury spent seven days hearing testimony from 17 witnesses regarding the incident. Ultimately, the jurors concluded that the shooting was an act of self-defense, determining that the individual who was targeted during the robbery fired the shot that killed Calvert. As a result, no charges will be brought against the shooter.
Despite this finding, the grand jury held Phinizee legally accountable for Calvert’s death, citing evidence that he had encouraged or directed the young boy to participate in the robbery. Connolly emphasized that Calvert looked up to Phinizee, who played a pivotal role in involving the child in an armed robbery that tragically cost him his life.
Phinizee, who is set to be tried as an adult, was released on bond following his arrest in March. He is currently under supervision, monitored by a GPS ankle bracelet to ensure compliance with the conditions of his release.
