Shirley T. Copeland, 89, of Lawrenceburg, TN, passed away on Monday, July 21, 2025, at NHC Healthcare Scott. She was born on November 23, 1935, to William A. Smith and Mary Lea Clayton Smith. Shirley was married to LC Copeland and they raised two sons in Lawrence County, TN. She was well known in the community for her work as a cashier at South End Grocery and for owning South End Service Station and Towing.
Shirley was a master at propagating plants and spent many hours working in her flower beds. She also enjoyed bowling, arts & crafts, and quilting. She had a heart for all animals, especially her many dogs and granddogs over the years, as well as her pet rooster, Peeper, whom she rescued and raised.
She was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, friend, and Nana. Shirley cared for both her spouse and mother through extended illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, William A. Smith and Mary Lea “Docie” Clayton Smith, her spouse, LC Copeland, two brothers, Frank Smith and Charles “John” Smith, one sister, Lolly Luttrell, and one half-sister, Carlene Camp.
Shirley is survived by two sons, Gary Copeland and wife, Susan, and Jeff Copeland, one grandchild, Jamie Copeland, and several nieces and nephews. The family expressed gratitude to The Summit of Lawrenceburg, NHC Homecare, NHC Healthcare Scott, and Caris Hospice for their love and care over the last 3 years.
Arrangements are being handled by Neal Funeral Home, and the family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at Neal Funeral Home. Graveside services and interment will be conducted at Lawrence County Memorial Gardens at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 24, 2025, with David Simmerman officiating.
Shirley was one of a kind and will be greatly missed by her family and friends until they meet again in Heaven.
