Penny Lisa Smith Henkel, 64, of Loretto, TN, passed away on March 30, 2025, at her favorite place, the cabin she shared with her late husband, Anthony “Bud” Henkel. Penny was a devoted quilter and diamond painter, finding joy in creating beautiful works of art. She cherished time spent with her family and friends, and her love for Christmas and music was deep-rooted. Penny’s faith was an integral part of her life, and she was known for her godly nature. Her adoration for her grandchildren was immeasurable.
Penny was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony “Bud” Henkel, her father, Robert Smith, and her brother, Russell Smith. She is survived by her daughter, Nakea Townsend, and husband Tommy “Opie” Townsend, her son, Josh Henkel, and wife Cassie Farr Henkel, as well as her grandchildren, Tyanna, Lillian, Dakota, and Jaxton Hunter. She is also survived by her mother, Margaret Duke Smith, brother Nathan Smith, and sister Amy Crunk.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2025, from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Greenhill Funeral Home. The funeral service will take place on Friday at 1:00 P.M. in the funeral home chapel, with Josh Taylor officiating. Penny will be laid to rest in Loretto Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers for the service will be Jaxton Henkel, Tim Walters, Tony Beckman, Kevin Quillen, Kolton Hallmark, Cory Daniel, Evan Dunn, and Nathan Smith. Honorary pallbearers include Pat Quillen, Jeff Quillen, James “Jim” Gibbs, and Larry Bradley.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in memory of Penny Henkel. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
