Dr. James R. Stilwell Jr., MD, of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away on February 4, 2026, at the age of 96. He was born on August 27, 1929, in Birmingham, Alabama, to J.R. Stilwell Sr. and Edna Mae Stilwell. Dr. Stilwell is survived by his brother, John Q. Stilwell, PhD, of Dallas, Texas; three children, James R. Stillwell III, David Reed Stilwell, and Amy Lynn O’Callaghan; five grandchildren; and one niece. He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, a brother, and a stepson.
Dr. Stilwell was a dedicated plastic surgeon, having studied in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and practiced in various locations, caring for over 80,000 patients throughout his career. He was a beloved husband and father, and his memory will be cherished by his family and friends.
Visitation will be held at St. Michael’s Church in St. Florian, Alabama, with a Funeral Mass and burial to follow. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Elkins Funeral Home. Dr. Stilwell’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
