TDOT Suspends Lane Closures for Memorial Day Weekend

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has announced the suspension of all construction-related lane closures for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend. This suspension will take effect from noon on Friday, May 22, 2026, and will last until 6 AM on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.

TDOT Commissioner Will Reid stated that this decision is intended to help maintain smooth and safe traffic flow during a period of significantly increased travel. Approximately 950,000 Tennesseans are expected to travel over the holiday weekend, with about 795,000 of those traveling by automobile.

While construction-related lane closures will be paused, motorists should remain alert. They may still encounter lane restrictions in long-term construction zones, where reduced speed limits will be enforced. Drivers should be aware that fines of up to $500 can be imposed for speeding in active work zones.

Travelers are encouraged to check traffic conditions online or by dialing 511 for real-time updates. This information can aid in planning routes and avoiding potential delays.

In addition to adhering to speed limits, drivers are reminded to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles and TDOT HELP trucks. This practice is essential for ensuring the safety of both motorists and roadside workers.

As the holiday weekend approaches, TDOT’s measures are designed to facilitate safer travel conditions for all road users. The agency’s proactive approach aims to minimize disruptions and enhance the overall travel experience during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
