Upon their arrival, deputies encountered a woman in the driveway who was holding a torch lighter in each hand. Noticing the patrol vehicle, she began to walk away towards the road.
The officers instructed the woman to halt and engage in conversation with them. She exhibited signs of distress, appearing to sweat heavily and struggling to breathe while frequently licking her lips. When questioned, her responses were limited to brief, one-word answers, and she denied experiencing any medical issues or using drugs or medication. Given her behavior and the training of the officers, they suspected that she might be under the influence of an intoxicating substance.
Despite her attempts to leave the scene, the deputies informed her that she was not free to go and would be detained for further questioning. When asked for her identification, she reached into her purse but initially failed to produce any ID. A subsequent search of her purse revealed a clear pipe containing a white residue, as well as a small bag with a white powdery substance believed to be methamphetamine.
The woman was identified as Carla Buie. A resident at the property indicated that Ms. Buie had been permitted on the premises earlier but had briefly left. Upon her return, her behavior was described as erratic, and the resident mentioned that her presence was not necessary due to the medical conditions of the individuals living there.
Ms. Buie was subsequently taken into custody and charged with public intoxication, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was transported to the Lawrence County Jail, where she was placed in a booking cell, and the water supply was turned off to prevent any potential disposal of narcotics.
Authorities have submitted a request for a drug examination to both the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and local law enforcement. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
