William Mac Barnett, age 84, of Sewanee, TN passed away Thursday, June 20, 2024 in Winchester, TN. He was a native of Lawrence County, TN and a retired bank executive. Mr. Barnett served his country honorably as a Submariner in the U.S. Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis and also served two years in the National Guard.
Mr. Barnett was a motorhead working along side his father at Barnett Motor Company in his youth. He spent his spare time racing and repairing cars. In later years Alfa Romeo’s were his car choice.
Mr. Barnett was preceded in death by his parents, William Hershel Barnett and Mamie Aileen Jane Hughes Barnett, his only son Kevin Barnett, three sisters, Betty Jo Murrell, Lou Nell Hood, and Shelby Jean Purcell; two brothers, J.C. Barnett and Kenneth Travis Barnett; and his beloved dog Scruffy.
He is survived by his wife of forty years Nancy Beard Barnett of Sewanee, TN; only daughter Kerri Beth Barnett of Killen, AL; daughter-in-law Cindy Barnett, one granddaughter Lauren Barnett, one grandson Brett Barnett, all of Nashville, TN; a special niece, Beverly (David) Peery of Eagleville, TN and other nieces and nephews, and his three fur baby cats Cupcake, Tommy, and Molly.
Arrangements are being handled by Neal Funeral Home, 231 N. Military Avenue, Lawrenceburg, TN. To celebrate his U.S. Navy Submarine Service this “Old Salt” requested U.S. Navy burial at sea off the coast of San Diego. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In remembrance of Mr. Barnett’s life, charitable contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or the Humane Society of the United States.
